Secular Humanistic Jewish Experience in Israel

Join the Birmingham Temple, a Secular Humanistic Jewish congregation, in this groundbreaking tour of Israel and the Palestinian Territories to explore their histories and communities through multiple perspectives.  Rabbi Jeffrey Falick, who has lived in Israel and led many tours there, will be joined alternately by two guides, one Jewish and one Muslim. They will accompany our group to the significant sites, the cosmopolitan cities, and the scenic landscapes of this diverse region with a special emphasis on understanding them through the eyes of its residents.

We will begin with the historical complexities of Jerusalem, continue into the villages of the West Bank, explore the beauty of the north and end our trip on the shores of the Mediterranean in secular Tel Aviv. Along the way we will have the opportunity to meet local activists, politicians, artists and leaders as we learn about contrasting national narratives and explore future prospects for co-existence in the region. And, of course, we will spend time with Israel’s Secular Humanistic Jewish leaders and learn about the role of our movement in Israeli life.

With a unique approach that accesses contemporary issues through personal storytelling, relationship-building, and facilitated discussions with conflict resolution professionals, the tour features a diverse array of speakers—Israeli and Palestinian, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Druze, conservative, moderate and progressive. Discover how conflict affects environmental concerns in the Dead Sea Valley, enjoy home-cooked cuisine with local families, explore ancient archeological sites and enjoy bustling, colorful bazaars. With time for discussion, reflection, fun, and free time to enjoy local spots, this will be a unique tour!
